FAMOUS WOMEN IN UMUERI HISTORY

 

1. Nne Iguedo ~ The Widely acclaimed maternal founder and mother of ancient Umueri Town. She was equally known as the founder of the various Umuiguedo clans that includes Ogbunike, Awkuzu, Umueri, Nando and part of Onitsha

 

2. Lady Kate Ndive ~ A Business woman said to have played very contributed immensely during the Otuocha Land dispute that culminated to 1984 Supreme court Judgement, that reversed the Appeal court decision giving the title of Otuocha land to our Neighbor. She was Honored by Umueri Community as " Ogbu na-Echendo 1 of Umueri)

 

3. Mrs Kate Okwecha (Nee Ekweonu)~ A Prominenent Nigeria Civil Servant that rose to Super Secretary in the Civil Service Commission and have been of immense help in employment of various Umueri sons and daughters into Civil service & government departments.

 

 

4. Chief Mrs Benedict Longe (Nee Ndive) ~ A Prominent daughter of Umueri , married to Mr. Longe , the Secretary of Federal Government of Nigeria during the Second Republic. She was also honored by Umueri Community as Omeluora 1 of Umueri.

 

5. Iyom Ijaali Ameke~ A famous Community leader and Chairperson of Oluokala -Women wing of UGA. She abolished the "Amulu n'Uno nuo n'Uno" syndrome among our womenfolk- whereby women married from other towns are discriminated against. She encouraged men to marry from any town of their choice and admonished women from discriminating against women married from other towns.

 

6. Chief Mrs Oyibo Udano~ A Prominent Umueri Woman married variously at diffeent occasions to prominent politicians that include Late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe(Nigeria First President), Dr. A U Akpabio (Minister of Education Eastern Region) and Renown Banker Nwachukwu. She attracted numerous govt patronages to the community.

 

7. Iyom Udueluo Okasia ~ An activists and leader of Oluokala that succeeded Iyom Ijaali Ameke. She championed developmental project. As activist, She stood in between the miscreats that took to robbery after the communal crisis and UGA to reach a pact that brought temporarily the killing of Umueri community leaders in 1990s

 

8. Chief Mrs Victoria Iheka (Nee Okonkwo):- A former Bank Executives and philanthropist that contributed immensely during the land litigation dispute with Aguleri over Otuocha land. She was honored as "Ada-di-ora mma 1" of Umueri in aftermath of Otuocha land dispute Judgement in 1984 by Igwe Nelson Ugume Okoye

 

9. Iyom Cecilia Metchie ~ She was a women leader that brought a lot of developmental projects during her tenure as Chairperson of Oluokala. In her tenure, Meemah Hospital, which is now known as Sahara Hospital was built to take care of the health need of the community.

 

10.Mrs Ezigbo Ajah. A fearless woman and heroine of her era. She invented the use of water bottle to stone the enemy during the 1965 communal crisis with our neighbor.

 

11. Mrs Ugoba Okoye ~ A Community leader that her group of women popularly known as "Otu Ugoba" built a classroom block at Umueri Government Technical College in 80s as their contribution to the development of Education in Umueriland.
