Crime News: Udeano’s Assailants fear dead

Crime News: Udeano’s Assailants fear dead.

Umueri- 23rd May 2010.

Nemesis has caught up with two suspected robbery men, whose stock-in-trade includes robbery, extortion and kidnapping as they were rumored to have been allegedly killed by members of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The two suspected Gang members, names with-held was said to have been terrorizing Otuocha and its environs in recent time. A source close to the area of Incidents recalled that the Gang Members earlier robbed an Eminent Umueri Chief named Chief Mathew Udeano of #300.000.00(Three Hundred Thousand Naira) and carted away with his Automatic Riffle Gun sometime last three weeks. This robbery was duly reported to the Police authority for record purposes.

While an anonymous source close to Anambra Police command clarified that luck ran out of the gang when they carried out a failed robbery operation at Asaba, Delta State Capital. However, the Police were able to recovered Chief Udeano’s Gun. On further Investigation, one of the suspects was nabbed. He confessed to be part of the robbery syndicate that robbed Chief Udeano and trap was subsequently set to nab his accomplices and it was perfectly executed as one of the gang syndicate, a youngman was lured and found in possession of firearms. While two others rumored to be ladies are at large and wanted by Anambra State Police Command

Efforts to reach the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), Awkuzu or the Anambra State Police Command at Awka proved abortive as no officer wanted to comment on the incidence.

It would be recalled that violent crimes and kidnapping have been on rise in the state in recent times. The Anambra State Government has provided to the Anambra State Police Command and other conventional security agencies with materials and cash for motivation. The break down shows that a total of 121 police pick-up vans, valued at N576 million were given to the police (N4.8 million for each). The Nigeria Army formation in the State had reportedly received 25 pick-up vans valued at over N100 million since 2006.

Also, four sets of Israeli made Armoured Personnel Carriers valued at about N400 million (about N100 million for each) had been delivered to the State Police Command. A number of strategic police stations had also been rebuilt or renovated by the Government of Anambra State since 2006. Some of them are the State Command Headquarters, Awka, the Nnewi Central Police Station, which was burnt down during the 2006 Government and the MASSOB face-off, and the "33" Police Station near Nsugbe, Anambra State.
