Clans(Quarters) in Umueri

Eri, the widely acclaimed progenitor of Igbo race and whose children founded the town called Umueri in his memory has varieties of account of his story. He has been variously described as God sent according to Oral story and legends. Little is quite know of his days and no one actually knows the exact time that he lived. Thats why in Anambra valley the phrase "Eri-Oge" - literally means "time of Eri"  refers to time of no exact date. But Scholar have put the date to be around 960AD which invariably implies that the Igbos are indeed the first to settle in Southern Nigeria

However, From oral and recorded accounts, he is said to  come down from the sky, having been sent by God (Chukwu). Eri settled and established in the middle of Anambra river valley(The Present Umueri and Aguleri enclave) where he married many wives (not limiting to two wives according to many writers). In addition to the numerous wives, he has other concubines that bore him children .Amongst the wives is Iguedo (from the Ogiso/bini lineage) who bore him Dabawor the founder of the present Umueri.
But recent study has unravel that Eri comes along with many people of which he was able to married and form Neighborhood. Some Scholars have even traced his migration from East via Sudan down to Igala land from there to the present Anambra Valley. There are other accounts which tend to classified Iguedo as Daughter of the great Eri  and this have indeed caused a lot of distortion to the story of the Great Eri. Although this have been variously rebuked by the oral tradition of Umueri -which is a tradition passed from generation to generation and which emphasis that Umueri are the homogeneous children of Eri, hence the prefix- Umueri Ovuakwu (refering to the homogeneity of the town unlike others that were founded by assimilation between people of diverse background and lineages.  But In spite of these distortions, the name Umueri which literally means "Children of Eri" is a natural and unbiased nomenclature indicating Umueri relationship with Eri.
