The Greater Umueri liberation Forum (GULF) is indeed elated at the news of commissioning of Oil wells in Aguleri Otu in Anambra State and the recent pronouncement of the State as an Oil Producing States bearing in mind that Umueri would be hosting the Refinery. We commend His Excellency, President Good luck Jonathan for this action which would be beneficial to all the people of Anambra State and Nigerians in general. This grass rooted project would indeed elevates “Anambra Valley”- our land as the “Job basket” of the state as it would provide numerous job opportunities to teeming unemployed youths in the state. Back home to our area, it would vigorously enhance the standard of living of our people if it well managed. For this singular action, we want Mr. President to know that history will always remember him on a positive side.

We particularly commend the effort of Mr. Peter Obi led Government of Anambra State in realizing this pace-setting project that would be beneficial to the people of State in particular and Nigeria in general. It has reinstates the belief in some quarters that the state is divinely and potentially blessed by the Almighty God in human and material resource wise. Hence, Umueri and other communities in the area would do everything humanly possible to ensure that the successful take off of this project would yield the desired dividends. We assure you of our communities’ readiness to co-operate and work with you in order to attain our mutual goals. We also commend the Emeka Anyaoku led Board of directors of Orient Plc and its management for the selecting our land for the proposed Refinery.

We appeals to Orient and State Government to ensure that they dialogue with host communities in regards to land acquisition for this all important oil exploration. The 114 hectares of land acquired in Umueri by Orient Plc for the Proposed Refinery (which is been installed abroad), should be properly handle by all concerned parties for the benefit of mankind. They should endeavor to sit down and discuss with all the affected communities as it would create a sense of belonging on the part of the host communities. This would go a long way into building the desired trust and good neighborliness between the Oil firms and the communities.

Moreover, we appeal to those at the top echelon of Orient Management to also ensure that the “Local Content Law” as promulgated by the National Assembly is fully implemented in its dealing with the communities. They should be aware that farming and fishing are the major occupations of our people and with this exploration of Oil from same land these occupations stand threatened; hence effort should be made to provide alternative means of livelihood to our rural dwellers. There is absolutely needs for the people of our area, mostly the youths to benefit immensely in Jobs opportunities, scholarship, contracts, etc.

Finally, the umbrella body of Umueri professionals both home and abroad reiterates our resolve to ensure cordial relationship between the host communities and Oil Company. We promise to co-operate with Orient and State Government towards ensuring that the goals and objectives of setting up Refinery in our land (Umueri) would not be defeated.
