Onwa Ito

Onwa Ito festival( feast of 3rd Moon or month)  in Umueri town is indeed a month preoccupied by feast. Its a month that mark the end of the planting season in the community. The Villages of Umueri uses the festival as thanksgiving for the gods and ancestors for save planting and asking for protection of the plants and bumper harvest during harvest. Its akin to the America thanksgiving holiday

In Precolonial days when the gospel has not reached the town, parents do buy fowls for every male child for the feast as an offering to the gods and ancestors. Meanwhile the Festival which has its entertainment where wrestling between all sets of age grade are exhibited are also used by children to organize wrestling matches between the fowls bought for the occasion. Its a sort of mock wrestling before the proper even begins.Anyone whose fowl emerge champion is seen as favorite amongst the children and hence the parents are compel to buy big and stronger fown whenever the festival is around the corner.

Traditionally, the festival comes up in the twelfth days of the 3rd moon. The main even last only for a day but fowls are bought in advance to enable children take them to the preparatory wrestling match otherwise referred as a mock competition.

On the day proper, the fouls are slaughtered as an offering to the gods(ikenga)and prepared as a meal and brought to the family palace(Obi) of each family and eat together by all members of the family. The memory of the feast is always alive in the children as it is the festival they always wish to come around because of the sports it makes out of them

Today the advent of Christianity has written the obituary of this memorable festival. which most people sees as heathenistic festival since the thanksgiving are been giving to Idol gods and not to God the omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscientitic.

To God be the glory
