Umueri, Igbo & Isreal Relationship

Following Oriental News search for the true progenitor of the Igbo nation and se¬ries of publications on this, custodians of Igbo culture in Anambra State are com¬ing out from their shelves to further shape the debate. In this chat, Elder Mike Edoz-ieuno Ndive Aniegboke who claims to be a direct descen¬dant of Eri picked holes in the claims by the Eze Nri in Ana-ocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, HRH Igwe Obidigwe Onyesoh, who was the first to begin the interesting encounter and fact-finding by Oriental News.

According to Aniegboka, the first Igbo settlers had migrated from Israel, adding that the original Igbo descen-dents from Israel did not have kings, insisting that the current practice in Igbo land was a bor¬rowed culture.
He also insisted that the ma¬jority of the people who make up the Igbo of today were those who came from Israel while the rest migrated from Igala and other places.

Onyesoh's claim that the Igbo first settled in Nri Igwe Sir, you are right in say¬ing that there have been several stories on Igbo nation by the un¬informed and those writing were writing out of their imagination. I, however, want to disagree with some of the information you gave out in your interview. I have to take your story one after the other as I continue to bring out facts with proofs. I'm speaking as a direct descen¬dant of the founder of Igbo Hebrew in Africa, I will not only reply to your stories, but will continue to place facts on this subject; who the Igbo are and how they settled in this part of the world.

The Igbo first settled in Anam¬bra or Omambala River valley in a place called Umueri. That is why all early Europeans who first came as administrators and cler¬gymen called the area Umueri Village. Umueri means children of Eri. Nri is known to Umueri people because they are our sons who left from Nri-Aka Ugumana Ugume Urnueri who are direct descendants of Dabawor, we call Dabawor Nna mulu Eri. This name (Dabawor) is Hebrew. My people were Hebrew worshipers in the past and up till today we still maintain it in our shrine where he (Dabawor) settled, the three tents as in Hebrew worship- one tent for the Levites, one for men, one for women. Our ancestral father left from Eri clan of God's tribe in East of Jordan in about I,300BC with his fol¬lowers when Molic attacked their inhabitation in East of Jordan called the Trans-Jordan tribes/inhabited by Rubenites, the first son of Jacob. Eri was the fifth son of Gad and one of the seventh clans that made

up Gads tribe (read Genesis 46-16; Joshua 13-8; Joshua 13,24-28; Joshua 13-29-8; Joshua 13,24-28; Joshua 13-29-31). Among the 12 tribes of Israel, God chose one tribe, the tribe of Levi as his own to serve him as priests and Levites. This is the tribe Moses and Aaron came from. God divided them into the 11 remaining tribes of Israel. This tribe is made up of three clans (Read Joshua 13-14). Our ancestral father is from Meriri clan in the tribe of Levi. He was a high priest and leader of his people when the Molecians attacked their inhabitation. So many inhabitants were taken captive to another country and many scattered to different parts of the world.

Before (Dabawor) the founder of Igbo nation in Africa left with his followers, there were no kings in Israel, the priests were their leaders. Later, the Israelites demanded for a king from Samuel the priest, a king to be like other countries around them because of the misbehav¬iour of Samuel's children at his old age. (Read ISamuel 8, 1 -7) The leader and his followers had long left Israel before Saul was made king. This is why the Igbo He¬brew in Africa still don't believe in kings because it is not traditional to us Igbos.

This adage is very true, the Whiteman imposed warrant chiefs on us and those of us, the Igbo who had kings before the Whitemen came borrowed it from Igala and Ogiso, later Idu, now Ibenu-Benin kingdom.

Like my town, Umueri, we supply Idu kingdom with charm makers, warriors, because they have outstanding army fighting several wars in the ancient days. This group of warriors and charm makers broke Omabala, River Niger into two and crossed through Anam to Ilushi Ishan, Edo State to Obodo Idu. That is why you see the majority of Ishans look and behave like the Igbo people. It was from this charm makers and warriors that they crowned kings and Onowu lyase- after several wars they assisted them in fight¬ing.

Igwe sir, your maternal kings who form the paternal kings of Diodi in Akamkpis Nri may have migrated from the place you called Ugbene and Amanuke before you settled at Agu-Ukwu. The original Nri from Nri-Aka Ugumeana in Umueri Anambra East naturally had no king like every other true Igbo town originally. These Nri towns of Enugu-Ukwu, Neno-via, Enugu Agidi and Nri town are named after the father of Umueri family; that is why you have the same names like we have in Umueri: Umuatuolu, Enugu-Uk¬wu, Umunriamu in Nneovia, Umudiana in Nri, to mention but a few.
This nucleus family of Levites is the only one that cleans taboo (Ikpu-alu) in case of abomination when one hangs one¬self, among others. Ugumeana is the only family authorized to do this thing, but when they are not found their daughters' son can represent them. So, the family that does this in Nri belongs to Nri-Aka Ugumeana.

You also claimed that you are Eri descendant from Egypt, this is abomination. I have told you the people you met as you migrated are Hebrews who migrated very much earlier from Eri clan East of Jordan.

You are Igala and Jukuns that were driven away by the feudalist during the expansion of Islam by Osman Dan Fodio from Sokoto area. I believe you may have migrated from Egypt and are Egyptians and not Eri children of Israel. So, close up that your historical record on Eri.

We the people of Umueri, the original Eri descendants know when Enugu-Eziagulu Aguleri and Onogu in Igbariam, Nteje, Nsugbe migrated to this area called Omabala area; that was after the treaty between us the Igbo and Igala. You told us in your publication that you went to sleep at Obuga Enugu Aguleri palace of the original Eze to make it easy for you to go to Agbanabo confluence of Ezu na Omabala to obtain clay soil from the bottom of the river for the molding of Udu-eze. You know truly that past kings of Nri had been coming to Agbanabo confluence of Ezu na Omabala to obtain the same Udu-eze you went for and also slept in Obu-Uga. It is surpris¬ing today that you said it is a mere formality and not ritual, that you can as well go to any confluence of two rivers to do the same thing as that of Agbanabo. You also told us in this same publication that the Eze Ogalagidi the third, Igwe Alphonsus Ak-wuba Idigo, in 1974 publicly denied that they were not aborigi¬nal Aguleri, that they migrated from Igala. We are not disputing his claim. The correction we are making here is that there had been original Eze in Umuezeoria in Enugu Aguleri before him. This traditional ruler was recognized by the colonial masters as a warrant chief.

The founder of Igbo Hebrew in Africa left with his family and followers, Eri clan of Gads tribe, moved first upwards towards the Mediterranean Sea and later returned to Egypt, crossed to Ethiopia then to Southern Sudan from where they sailed through the rivers and finally found themselves in this place called Omabala or Anambra River valley and settled in a place they named after their clan, Umu-Eri which means children of Eri. The climate and vegetation of this area suited them because they were like the area they left from East of Jordan. So, the present Nri people in Aniocha LGA are children of Eri.

The early European historian called them and those villages related to Umueri in Awka, Umueri villages in Awka Divi¬sion, and those in Anambra or Omabala and environs are called Umueri villages in Onitsha division.

Eze Raphael Akwuba Idigo is the founder of modern Aguleri. This fam¬ily has done so much for Aguleri in all sectors. They expanded Aguleri territory, increased their merger population to what it is today not by war, but by wisdom. His father, Onyekaomelu Idigo was a hunter and warrior before the coming of the Whiteman. Aguleri is not a name of a person, but that of a farmland, Agu Eri and the present inhabitants are different immigrants from different places. The head village of Aguleri is Okpu. The aboriginal Okpu is of Ugume Um¬ueri before the strang¬ers of Enugu-Eziagulu joined him from Ibaji-ala.

The Whiteman could not pronounce Agu-Eri hence he added the alphabet (L) to become Agul¬eri and those still living within the Ibaji Igala area many miles away were called Aguleri- Out, while those-ii the main land are called Cloria-Igbo or Aguleri Igbo. The villages of Umungalagu took an oath of obedience before Ugume Um¬ueri settled them in their present place, while their brothers that came with them moved down to Awkuzu called Umudene Akwuzu. Isiokwe village took an oath of obedience from Ugume and Okpu then of Umueri before they settled.

Onoja is a giant warrior from Igala, he was a son of Igala land. He had six toes. He lived and camped with his army in a place called Ekpe in Ikenga Umueri. We the Umueri people fought him and his group for decades. He fought and made most people and towns living along Oma¬bala or Anambra costal line to go inwards-up to Onitsha, Ogbaru, Abor, Oguta down to Rivers State where he captured people and took them down to Ogulugu along Omabala River in today's Enugu State which was his headquarters. There, the Arab slave traders patronized him.

The charm that sent him and his men out of Umueri territory was made with soldier-ants called Ota Okwelisi which encircled his camp and penetrated their sleeping rooms and they in turn sent us what we today call Igala Agha Edo, a red¬dish insect that is less harmful but moves in brigade. He was the person after several wars that brought about the treaty the Igbo and Igala made, he established most Igala villages within Igbo coastal areas either directly or by his followers or their native doctors and fishermen. So, he never founded Igala nation.

Nteje is an Igala name taken from (Ntiji) diji in Igbo dialect. Nteje is made up of different people from different places. The first settlers, the people of umuevi village are still proud to jubilate during festivals of Umuevi Igala.

Meaning the Igbo have made me to rise or have made me numerous. This town is made up of two groups the Igbo and Igala. Onogu has never denied their Igala heritage they met the Igbo when they came, and during their feast the jubilation is always Onogu Igala. Through marriage and social interaction they merged and became one community.

Nsugbe means mix together. They are different people that migrated from differ¬ent places and decided to become one and had meetings at a place called Okuku-isu (Ama). Enugu Nsugbe first settled at Okpinka believed to have migrated from Igala Oguari Amumu previously of the same lineage from Enuani Delta Igbo who first settled with their brothers Umu-lkwu Anam across Omabala River where up till today they still have their fish ponds and lakes together with their brothers there. It was through communal marriage with Nneyi Umueri that brought them across Omabala River to their present abode; so also is Akpalagu and Agbalagbo villages.

Abah in Idemili Local Government is believed to be the son of the daughter of Eri Aka in Ugume Um¬ueri, while Amagu village ancestors came from Achala and settled first at Okpuno-Ivite Area near Oyi River.

According to Igwe, we the direct de¬scendants of the founder of Eri whose founding fathers in Africa is Dabawor, a Jewish word, have not been told or heard directly from Amenuke people that they migrated from us, Eri. I have also read their history but never found any area they mentioned such. It is these mercenaries from Aguleri and co that are forcing this names of different known and unknown communities on Eri which the Aguleris, don't belong to.
